Card Foreign-Transaction Fee
Card spending feels free until the statement arrives. Enter the fee structure and the monthly spend to see the real cost.
Some cards waive the foreign-transaction fee but still apply a rate markup. Check both lines, and check whether the ATM operator adds its own fee.
Fee versus rate
A card can advertise no foreign-transaction fee and still cost money through the rate it uses. The statement usually shows the rate; compare it with the mid-market rate for that date to see the markup.
Always choose the local currency
When a terminal offers to charge in your home currency, it is offering a conversion at its own rate. Paying in the local currency usually leaves the conversion to your card, which is typically cheaper.
Frequently asked questions
Are ATM fees charged twice?
Sometimes: the local operator charges, and your bank may charge as well. Both belong in the cost.
Do credit cards always beat debit cards?
No. It depends on the specific card's fees and rate, not the card type.
