ATM Withdrawal Cost

Small withdrawals are expensive when the fee is fixed. See the effective percentage before you take out cash again.

A fixed fee makes small withdrawals expensive. Withdraw larger amounts less often if the area is safe and the daily limit allows it.

The fixed-fee trap

Two withdrawals of 100 cost twice the fixed fee of one withdrawal of 200. The percentage charge is the same. If the machine limits the amount, look for a higher limit before adding a second withdrawal.

Decline conversion on the screen

An ATM may offer to convert the withdrawal to your home currency. That conversion is usually priced at a margin. Choose the local currency and let your bank convert.

Frequently asked questions

Is it cheaper to use a debit card?

It depends on the account's fee schedule. Compare the all-in percentage, not the card type.

Do all ATMs charge the operator fee?

No. Some networks and banks waive it. The fee is shown before you confirm.
